Included in the diary is a description of the Scots settled by the Colombian Agricultural Association, and near the back is an entry "Liverpool June 1830" followed by handwritten article entitled "Sincere Friendship" that had appeared in the "British Magazine", Jan. 1830; also issue of "The Devon Historian" no. 26, April 1983 which includes an article by Sir Edgar Vaughan on the diary; typescript (x, 80 leaves) of the diary edited by Edgar Vaughan, with introduction, footnotes, and appendices.

Beaton's family, who likely belonged to the minor gentry or to a professional class, lived in Glen Urquhart on the north side of Loch Ness. Patrick Beaton may have spent much time from home, perhaps at boarding school in England, although he certainly was at school for a period in Inverness. He completed over four years on the Isle of Skye in his first post after leaving school, though what this job was is not apparent. In 1824, in his early twenties, he travelled on the brig "Idris" to La Guair...
